About the Center for
Moravian Studies
The Center for Moravian Studies was established in the autumn of 1992 through a generous grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation. The original purpose of the center was to “promote and administer the scholarly study” of the Moravian Church. The Dean of Moravian Theological Seminary, Rev. Dr. David A. Schattschneider, had been working to establish such a center for years as Professor of Church History at the seminary.
The original goal of the Center was to provide a place where scholars and the general public could learn about the Moravians and pursue further research. His successor in the Church History department, the Rev. Otto Dreydoppel, served as director of the CMS from its inception until 2010 and expanded the publications of the Center.
